IKEA launches geothermal system to cut energy use

Furniture retailer IKEA, known for its massive stores, has partnered with the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab in Colorado to create a system that harnesses natural underground temperatures to cut energy usage. The geothermal system, which will be part of the company’s new two-story Centennial, Colo., store, will send liquid about 500 feet underground, where temperatures remain relatively mild and stable. The liquid will return to heat or cool the store as needed.
